Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Jiangsu Provincial Committee, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Jiangsu People's Congress

Li Yuanchao, of the ethnic Han group, is a native of Lianshui, Jiangsu Province. He was born in November 1950 and began work in October 1968 before joining the CPC in March 1978. He undertook postgraduate study and holds a doctoral degree in law.

Oct. 1968-Oct. 1972: Employee of the Shanghai Farm in Dafeng County, Jiangsu Province.

Oct. 1972-March 1974: Student of the Mathematics Department of Shanghai Normal University.

Dec. 1975-March 1978: Teacher at the Continuation Polytechnic of Luwan District, Shanghai.

March 1978-Jan. 1982: Student, vice-secretary and secretary of the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC) at the Mathematics Department of Fudan University.

Jan. 1982-Apr. 1983: Teacher at the Department of Management of Fudan University, vice-secretary of the university's CYLC committee.

Apr. 1983-Dec. 1983: Vice secretary and secretary of the CYLC Shanghai Provincial Committee.

Dec. 1983-Dec. 1990: Member of the Secretariat of the CYLC Central Committee (Sept. 1988-July: On-the-job postgraduate student at the School of Economics, Peking University, obtaining a master's degree).

Dec. 1990-Apr. 1993: Head of the No. 1 Bureau of the Leading Group for International Communication of the CPC Central Committee (Sept. 1991-July 1995: On-the-job doctoral student of the postgraduate program at the Party School of the CPC Central Committee majoring in scientific socialism, obtaining a doctoral degree in law.)

Apr. 1993-Nov. 1993: Deputy director of the Leading Group for International Communication of the CPC Central Committee and vice minister of the State Council Information Office.

Nov. 1993-March 1996: Deputy director of the International Communication office of the CPC Central Committee and vice minister of the State Council Information Office.

March 1996-Sept. 2000: Vice minister of culture and vice secretary of the ministry's Leading Party Group.

Sept. 2000-Oct. 2001: Vice secretary of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee.

Oct. 2001-Dec.2002: Vice secretary of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee and secretary of the Nanjing Municipal Committee.

Dec.2002: Secretary of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee and secretary of the CPC Nanjing Municipal Committee.

Li was a delegate to the 15th and 16th national congresses of the CPC and is currently serving as an alternate member of the 16th CPC Central Committee. He was a deputy to the 10th National People's Congress, a member of the Standing Committee of the 6th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and a member of the 8th and 9th CPPCC. He was a deputy to the 9th and 10th Jiangsu provincial people's congresses.
